Discover Things to do on Holiday in Ascension Island
Ascension Island is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1000 miles from Africa. The island was named by a Portuguese navigator who discovered it on Ascension Day – a date in the Roman Catholic Church calendar. Until recent years the island was closed to tourism and was used only as a military base. However, there is now one hotel and a number of guest cottages which are used as comfortable accommodation. Although visitors still require the administrator's written permission to visit the island and it boasts what was once named the worst golf course in the world, tourists still come for the fantastic Sport fishing, birdwatching (especially on Boatswain Bird Island) and if you come between November and May you may even spot the green turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs on the beaches.
