Discover Things to do on Holiday in Oman
Spectacular Oman has preserved its Arabian heritage with traditional low-rise buildings, a rich culture and friendly, hospitable people. As well as beautiful beaches and an untouched coastline, you’ll find magnificent inland scenery – groves of frankincense trees, the imposing backdrop of the Qara Mountains and intriguing ancient ruins dating from 3,000BC. The hotels here are on an equally impressive scale, with all the luxuries you could wish for.
The Jewel of Arabia
Muscat has no skyscrapers or high-rise buildings, so the tower and golden dome of the capital’s glittering Grand Mosque preside over an enchanting skyline. Old Muscat itself brims with Arabesque domes and arches, magnificent gardens, dazzling white houses and golden minarets. Often described as the ‘Jewel of Arabia’, Muscat is that rare thing – a modern Arab city, still alive with Arab tradition.
A haven for wildlife
Outside the city you’ll witness scenes little changed since the Middle Ages, such as the Friday goat and cattle market at Nizwa and traditional Bedouin camel trains. Fascinating wildlife includes the Arabian oryx, while the coastline is a nesting ground for five species of turtle, which in season can be viewed on a spellbinding night safari. Daytime opportunities for dolphin and whale watching abound.
Arabian delights
Desert exploration is an unmissable experience. Desert safaris range from gentle excursions to overnight trips in encampments under the stars. For a real thrill, try Wadi Bashing – a tough and challenging drive in a 4x4 over dry river beds and towering desert dunes. For underwater discovery, you cannot beat Oman’s sparkling clear waters and abundant sealife, which offers excellent diving and snorkelling.
